Can I Put a Propane Tank in the Trash?
No — propane tanks require special handling and shouldn’t go in a regular trash bin or curbside cart, regardless of size. Putting one in the trash risks damage to collection equipment and creates a real safety hazard.
Can I Recycle an Empty Propane Tank?
Not through regular curbside recycling — an “empty” tank typically still holds residual propane and is treated the same as a full one for disposal purposes. Exchange programs and household hazardous waste collection are the right paths either way.
What About Damaged or Rusty Tanks?
Exchange programs generally won’t accept a tank that’s visibly dented, heavily rusted, or otherwise damaged — that’s exactly the kind of tank that should go through household hazardous waste collection instead, where it can be handled safely regardless of its condition.
